Is it wise to post holiday photos online while you are still away from home?

From a security standpoint, it’s not the wisest idea. When you post real-time holiday updates – airport shots, beach photos, location tags – you’re basically announcing to the world, “My home is empty right now.” Most of your followers may be harmless friends, but posts can be shared, accounts can be public, and information spreads in ways we don’t fully see.

A safer habit is to enjoy the trip, take all the photos you want, and post them after you return, or at least with no clear indication that you’re still away. If you absolutely must share in real time, keep your audience limited and avoid mentioning dates, trip length or the fact that the whole family is gone.

It sounds a bit paranoid, but burglars have admitted in many cases that they use social media clues to pick targets. So enjoy the holiday, but treat location sharing like you’d treat locking your door: a small precaution that costs nothing and reduces unnecessary risk.
