Is it better to buy matching furniture sets or mix different pieces?

Matching sets are easy and safe, but mixed pieces often create more character and flexibility. A full showroom set – same sofa, same chairs, same tables – can look neat but a bit flat, like a catalogue. Mixing different pieces lets your personality show and makes the room feel collected over time rather than bought in one afternoon.

That said, mixing doesn’t mean chaos. Keep some things consistent: similar wood tones, complementary colours, or a shared style (modern, mid-century, rustic). For example, you might pair a neutral sofa from one brand with a vintage coffee table and different side chairs, but tie everything together with a rug that includes all their colours.

If decision-making stresses you, start with one “anchor” set, like a bed with matching side tables, and then add other pieces from elsewhere. Over time, as you gain confidence, you can swap and edit. The goal is a room that looks lived-in and personal, not strictly uniform.
