How many decorative items should be on a coffee table for it to look tidy?

A simple guideline is three to five items, depending on the table size, arranged in one or two small groups rather than scattered everywhere. Think in terms of “clusters” instead of singles: a stack of two books with a candle on top counts as one group, a small tray with a plant and remote controls as another.

Leave some clear space for actual use – cups, plates, phones. If every inch is covered in decor, the table stops being functional and starts feeling fussy. When you clean or wipe it, you’ll curse having to move too many pieces.

Play with height and shape: maybe one taller object (a vase), one medium (a candle or jar), and something low and flat (a book or tray). If the table still feels cluttered, remove one item. Most of the time, “slightly less” looks more intentional and calm.
